Crowdfunding: Lesson 1, T-minus 2 weeks

There is a formula for successfully crowdfunding a creative project. This series of blogs should serve as a road map for experienced and inexperienced crowdfunders alike. While the advice contained in them will not mesh perfectly with the experience of every Creative, sticking to these guide lines will give you a high probability of success.

Planning for your project should begin approximately 2 weeks before launch. There are a number of tasks on the pre-launch checklist, not the least of which will be designing the components of your project. But 2 weeks out – here is where to start:

Step 1: (T-minus 2 weeks) Build your team
Crowdfunding is a team sport. Whether you’re already working with collaborators (Creative Team) or planning to run a solo project, it’s important to realize that you will not be working on your own. Success in crowdfunding will require help from your friends, family and fans. Start by creating a list of your teammates. This list should include both your collaborators on the Creative Team AND high impact Fuelers who will support you by sharing your project with others. Do you have a friend who writes for the local paper? Put her on your team! Afterall, playing with teammates is more fun and easier than doing it all on your own.

Build your team as early in the process as possible. Once you have a core group of motivated teammates, you’ll be ready to proceed to Lesson 2.
